It is not necessary to mount the dedicated flash on the camera in order to get a better photo. Professional photography sometimes will get the flash off the cameras to create the directional light. Directional lights means the light source comes from the top or side of the subject instead of straight on light to hit the subject.

How does directional light gives better photo? If you look at the photos taken with the directional light, you'll notice that they are more professional looking as the directional lights adds dimension and depth to the photos. While photo taken with traditional built in flash are flat and boring.

In order to move the flash off the camera, we'll need to get a flash sync cord, a cable connects the flash to camera. With this small accessory, you can hold the flash unit away from the camera's lens. For example, if you hold the flash unit up high to the subject, the results will be similar to the sunlight hitting the subject.
