Soften harsh flash light with diffusion dome

Even with the dedicated flash light, the professional still facing some technical problem with it. The flash light is a small light source, hence the light become harsh especially it is closer to the subjects. To avoid this problem, pros will get softer and more flattering light.

There are many ways to get the softer light source. They all use tricks to soften and diffuse the light from their flash. The easiest and fastest trick is to snap a diffusion dome cap over the end of your flash, which softens and diffuses the light. Once this cap is on, aim the flash head upward at a 45° angle and it takes care of the rest.

If you own a Nikon SB-800 flash, it comes with the diffusion dome. You can get replacement of SW-i OH dome at B&H Photo. If you have a Canon flash, you can buy a diffusion dome separately. The Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce diffusion dome is a favorite with professional wedding and event photographers.

Adding this diffusion dome works great indoors, but outdoors where there’s really nothing much for the light to bounce off of, it doesn’t do much at all.
