Types of macro lenses

All the major camera and lens manufacturers make specialist macro lenses, which are designed to give their best performance when used close to a subject though they will also give excellent results when used for 'normal' photography as well. They are generally available in three focal lengths: standard (e.g., 55 mm and 60 mm), short telephoto (e.g., 90 mm and 105 mm), and telephoto (e.g., 200 mm), as well as zooms such as the Micro-Nikkor 70–180 mm. Many have a sufficient built-in extension to give a life-size magnification.

A large number of specialist macro lenses have been available over the years, particularly short-focus lenses to be attached to the end of bellows units. They often can be found secondhand, and can give superb results. Nikon used to make a 105 mm f/4 short-mount lens that was mounted onto a bellows unit; it is much sought after nowadays.
